A gala SS UNITED STATES reunion and celebration on October 2, 2004 will take place at the SS United States Lounge at the Windmill Point Restaurant in North Carolina. This Nags Head landmark was founded by Dr. Sara E. Forbes in 1987 and is completely outfitted with original fixtures and furniture from the SS UNITED STATES.
The Windmill Point, in addition to being a charming restaurant for dinners and social gathering, features such treasures as the SS UNITED STATES ship's bell, the Captain's table, decor from the famous Duck Suite and a host of other original memorabilia from the monumental liner. It is the perfect venue for a celebration of America's national flagship.
The October 2 celebration will feature
audiovisual presentations on the SS UNITED STATES
by Emmy Award-winning producers and some of the nation's
foremost maritime
historians. Members of the famous SS United States
darts team will oversee a darts competition, and
the original trophy won in 1957 by the SS United
States' darts team over their rivals on Cunard's
Queen Elizabeth will be on display.
Engineers Taddei and Hoke at the Forward Engine Room Control.
Honoring Accomplishment
The Saturday October 2, event will honor the designers, builders and crew of the SS UNITED STATES. These honorees will be joined by former passengers, preservationists, maritime experts and fans of the great liner from around the country as we spend an evening recognizing the dream of William Francis & Frederic Gibbs and the employees of Gibbs & Cox, Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Eggers & Higgins, and Smyth, Urquhart & Marckwald, among others.
Special awards and presentations are planned, including a moving ceremony in which the last flag flown aboard the SS UNITED STATES will be presented to Norwegian Cruise Line as a powerful tribute and symbol of the ship's renewal. Shown above: The Proud Eagle was everywhere aboard the SS UNITED STATES. This is just one of the many items on display at the Windmill Point Restaurant in their wonderful SS UNITED STATES Lounge.
